From the peak of Taormina down the slopes of the mountain, the beauty of the mountain and its landscape inspired the ancients to want to name it Mount Venus, arises along the middle of the coast, between mountain and sea, firmly anchored to the living rock as if on the horseback of a big rock, accessible only by narrow paths engulfed in nature, the village of Castelmola . Positioned at 37°51'33"48 N of latitude and 15°16'45"12 E of longitude, the village is small and well preserved. It is on the top of a overhanging rock on the Ionian sea 36km from Messina and 49Km from Catania. The village appears as a natural part of Taormina. Castelmola is accessible from the only passable road, perched on the top of an overhanging rock, 550m above the sea. The center is a group of houses, some really old, crouched like an eagle nest at the foot of the ruins of the Norman Castle. The ancient arch marks the entrance of the village, together with Saint Anthony's church, converted to municipal auditorium. Continuing on we arrive at De Gasperi street, the main street of the village, the only one passable by car and with no way out, it connects S.Antonino plaza with the south zone. Its little pedestrian streets intersect in the main plaza. It is possible to reach the highest point by going up a path, from the main plaza of the village, to the castle ruins. The panoramic balcony above Taormina, provides a visual vertigo: entering in your range of vision, above a bounty of prickly pears, the majestic Etna emerges with villages clining to its slopes, overlooking the Ionian Coast, the Giardini-Naxos gulf, the S.Alessio ridge, the strait of Messina and the Calabrian coasts. In Castelmola, besides enjoying peaceful time for leisure, it is possible to drink the world famous “Almond Wine”, produced with precious grapes, secret essences and sicilian almonds from the famous and ancient Caffè San Giorgio.
In his journey to Sicily, Goethe arrived in 1787 to Taormina and remained delighted by the enchanting landscape. “On the right on two high cliffs are the castles, below which the city spreads – wrote in his diary – and although the contructions are of a recent age, we have to think that even in the past there were others in the same place. Moreover you can see Etna, on the left the beach to Catania, or maybe Siracusa; the huge smoking of fire narrows the field of vision, but without creating alarm; the atmosphere sweetens and makes it look more distant and quiet than it really is.”
Thanks to the favourable position of the hotel, it is possible to reach the famous Volcano Etna within an hour. It is possible to visit the fascinating natural scenery of the park throughout every season.
